Young
Irish goalkeeper who joined the Brewers after failing to agree a new
contract at Notts County. Deeney had spent 6 seasons at Meadow Lane
and eventually forced his way into the first team, making over 40
appearances.
He spent
time on loan at Hull City, Ilkeston Town and Gresley Rovers whilst
with the Magpies.
Deeney
made an immediate impact after joining the Brewers part way through
the 2005/06 season, keeping 7 clean sheets in his first 10 games.
His
greatest moment came in the FA Cup game at home to Manchester United
when his late save earned a replay at Old Trafford and a bumper
payday for the Brewers.
It often
seemed though that Saul was playing to earn himself a move back to a
league club rather than to establish himself as a long term
custodian at Burton Albion.
His
constant dithering over committing to a new contract saw Nigel
Clough lose patience with him and he was released at the end of the
season.
He
returned to Notts County to establish himself as a bench warmer for
the 'Pies' but quickly managed to work his way down the football
pyramid to Hucknall.
Deeney
was handed a surprise return to the Brewers in October 2007 as cover
for Kevin Poole.
