Having impressed Nigel Clough when playing against the Brewers for Crewe Alexandra, Ryan was signed up on a non-contract basis. He started out in Crewe's academy, but he suffered a setback in his career when he suffered a serious knee injury.

Ryan quickly established himself at the heart of the Brewers defence with his pace on the ground and aerial ability. His composure in front of the opposition goal makes banjos and backsides spring to mind, and many a driver on the Derby Road has been terrified by Ryan's free kicks.
