Who are you?

Torquay United were one of the Football League's big underachievers. Their 80 years as a league club were all spent in the bottom two divisions and they only progressed past the third round of the FA Cup on three occasions.

The Gulls had a knack for getting beaten by non-league teams in the FA Cup, even suffering an embarrassing defeat to Tamworth in 1969.

Recent seasons have seen the club in turmoil. They narrowly escaped relegation to the Conference in 2004/05 and 2005/06 but were third time unlucky as they became a non-league club again for the start of the 2007/08 season.

Where in the world? Torquay is located on the 'English Riviera', a destination first made popular in Victorian times. It is a pretty seaside town which is one of the highlights on the fixture list if visiting in early season.

Torquay is famous as the location for the brilliant BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers. The series is based on an actual hotel in the town called the Gleneagles. (The hotel still exists and is not part of the Best Western chain). The town is also the birthplace of murder mystery author Agatha Christie.

Getting there?

By Road: From the end of the M5 follow the A38 and then turn left onto the A380. Continue until reaching Kingskerwell and take the first exit at the first large roundabout (Sainsburys and McDonalds here) onto the A3022.

After one mile turn left towards Babbacombe on the A379. After 1 mile turn left into Westhill Road. You will start to pick up signs for Torquay United.

Parking: There is plenty of parking in the surrounding streets.

By Rail: Torquay train station is about 2 miles from the ground and takes about 30 minutes to reach on foot. The nearest station to the stadium is Torre Station but not all trains stop here.

The Stadium? Plainmoor is a mixture of old and new with recent developments having made significant improvements. Away supporters are located in the Sparkworld Stand, a covered terrace behind one goal. Seats are also made available in the adjacent main stand.

Torquay United is a very friendly club and visiting fans are welcome in the Boots & Laces, the social club at the stadium. The nearby pubs are also very accommodating to visitors.
