Although
the history of Peterborough United football club can be traced back
to the 1930's, the club have only been a member of the Football
League since 1960. They won the Division 4 title in their first
season and gained promotion to Division 3, where they remained for
several seasons. They began to create a name for themselves in the
FA Cup, even beating Arsenal in the 1964/65 competition before
losing to Chelsea in the quarter finals. The club suffered the agony
of relegation back to Division 4 in 1968 when despite finishing 9th
they were demoted due to financial irregularities.
The club remained in the bottom two
divisions for more than 2 decades before success in the play-offs
saw the club promoted to Division One. Under the guidance of manager
Chris Turner, the club enjoyed two successive promotions. The Posh
managed only two seasons at this level before sliding back down the
leagues over the next 5 years.
Success was achieved again with a
second play-off success in 2000 when they defeated Darlington to
move back into Division 2. Several seasons of struggle followed
before relegation back to the bottom division of the Football League
in 2005.
Peterborough United continued their
good history of progress in the FA Cup throughout the 1980's and
90's. The fifth round of the competition was reached on two more
occasions, and appearances in the third and fourth rounds were
common place. Success in the League Cup was also achieved with a
semi-final appearance in the 1960's and a quarter final defeat by
Middlesbrough in the 90's.
Getting There: By Car -
The ground is located on the
outskirts of the town centre, on the A15 London Road. The ground is
fairly well signposted around the town centre.
From the North/West:
Drive into the town centre, follow signs for Whittlesey (A605) which
will lead you to the London Road. The new stand is quite visible
from some distance away, so keep a lookout.
By Train: Peterborough station
is around a mile away from the ground. Turn right out of station and
follow the main road, passing an Asda store on your right. At the
traffic lights near to Woolworths, turn right. Go over the bridge
and you can see the floodlights of London Road, over on your left.
It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the station to the ground.
The Stadium:
On one side of the ground
is the impressive looking South Stand. Opened in 1996 the 5,000
capacity stand replaced a former open terrace. The stand is two
tiered, covered and all seated. There is also a row of executive
boxes running across its middle. The other side, the Main Stand, is
a two tiered covered stand that is all seated. Both ends are covered
terracing that were given white roofs a couple of seasons back, in
an effort to brighten up their appearance. However they both have a
number of supporting pillars at the front of them, which could
impede your view of the game.

Just under 4,000 away fans can be accommodated in the Moyes End
Terrace, with a further 800 seats being made available to away fans
in the Main Stand. The terrace has several supporting pillars, which
may obstruct your view

Places To Eat & Drink:
The Peterborough Independent
Supporters Association (PISA 2000) seems to be on of the best and
most convenient places to enjoy a pre-match pint. The club is
members only, but for 50p you can gain temporary membership and get
free car parking. There is a good selection of real ales, plus hot
and cold snacks available. The clubhouse is located at Ebeneezers,
Grove Street, Woodston, which is just a five minute walk from London
Road.
Websites:
The club has the usual Premium TV website that all teams in the
Football League use. The address is
http://www.theposh.premiumtv.co.uk/. The best of the unofficial
sites is Posh.net which can be found at
