Who are you?

Histon are the fairytale team of non-league football. It is not just that some of their fans look like goblins, but more the way in which the club has risen through the pyramid to reach the Blue Square Premier for the first time.

The club gained promotion to the Southern League Eastern Division in 2000 as champions of the Eastern Counties League and quickly rose up winning the Southern League and Conference South in the process.

The village of Histon hardly seems to have jumped onto the bandwagon though as only around 800 fans bothered to jump off their tractors each week to watch football at the Glassworld Stadium in their Conference South winning season.

Where in the world?

Histon is a small village on the outskirts of Cambridge, surprisingly enough in the county of Cambridgeshire. The village has a population of about 7000 people.

Internet searches reveal some fascinating facts about Histon. Apparently there are 7 pubs in the village and jam is made there. And.......well that is it.

The most amazing fact is that the ground is actually in Impington, which is actually the next village!

Getting there?

By Road: The Glassworld Stadium is situated to the east of the B1049, just over half a mile north of Junction 32 of the A14, and as such is easily accessed from all directions.

From the East: take the A14 and exit at Junction 32 turning right onto the B1049.

From the West: take the A428 which becomes the A14 (at Junction 31) and exit at Junction 32 turning left onto the B1049.

From the South: take the M11 and leave at Junction 14 to take the A14 Eastbound (Newmarket, Ipswich) leave the A14 at Junction 32 turning left onto the B1049.

From the North-West (Huntingdon): take the A14 and leave at Junction 32 turning left onto the B1049.

From the North (e.g. the Fens): The A10 from Ely joins the A14 at Junction 33 and then approach from the East. The B1049 runs South from Wilburton through Cottenham and on to Histon. The ground is on the left of this road half a mile south of the traffic lights by Histon Village Green, just before the bridge over the old railway.

After leaving the A14 at Jct 32 the B1049 goes north, with the Holiday Inn on the right and then climbs to go over the old railway line with trees on both sides. The Glassworld Stadium is on the right hand side next to the recreation ground as the road descends the hill.

Parking: Good luck! There is no parking for supporters at the ground and street parking is limited. There are signs in the village indicating the designated parking areas.

By Rail: There is no train station in Histon. The nearest rail service is in Cambridge.

The fans view?

Histon fan Mike Trollope gave CTMD his views on the club and his expectations for the 2007/08 season;

Describe your club in one sentence. "A small friendly village club"

What are your expectations for this season? " Just to survive the first season in the Blue Square Premier"

How was last season for your club? "Fantastic!! Champions by 19 pts"

What is the best signing you have made this season, and why? "Probably Patrick Ada, but all our seven new signings have still to settle in and prove themselves"

Any shock departures? "Not really but sorry to see the older & long serving players go such as Ian Cambridge. Also a pity that Club did not renew contract with Martin Davis now at Cambridge City"

What can visiting fans expect on a trip to your club? "A friendly welcome from enthusiastic volunteers in a non-threatening environment. We don't have any, nor appreciate ill behaved supporters. The Glassworld is still a modest little ground but it is getting better all the time."

Which game are you looking forward to most, and why? "The first in the BSP v Burton"

Where is the best place to get a pint and a pie before the game? "Several good pubs for food in the centre of the village-Red Lion, The Boot, etc. The nearest pub for a drink is the The Vue, across the road. There are good reports of the snacks from the Mobile unit at the Away end."

What are your predictions for the games against Burton Albion? "In view of recent performances in the friendly matches I would be happy with a scoring draw, and lots of happy faces at BOTH ends of the ground. Please come and enjoy your first visit to Histon"

Also the views of another Histon fan (I didn't know they had so many!)

Describe your club in one sentence. Growing up quickly

What are your expectations for this season? Stay up, and take 6 points from Cambridge United

How was last season for your club? Wonderful, right from day one, people was talking about being able to win the league, to win it by 19 points shows that

What is the best signing you have made this season, and why?
Patrick Ada - adds power to back line, Chris Dillon, signed in March 2006 but was injured, this is the first time we've seen him play, looks sharp with an eye for goal

What can visiting fans expect on a trip to your club? Friendly welcome, even if we are still got just the basics,

Which game are you looking forward to most, and why? Cambridge United - bagging rights on Monday morning at work

Where is the best place to get a pint and a pie before the game?
Railway Vue - which is where visiting coaches are dropping off, about a 2 minute walk from the ground

What are your predictions for the games against Burton Albion?
Be nice to get off to a winning start, but I think it will be a 1 - 1 draw first off, and an away win when we travel to Burton.
