HALIFAX TOWN

It would be fair to say that Halifax Town have never really set the football world alight. Long periods of floundering around in the lower reaches of the Football League have been punctuated only by two relegations to the Conference. (Perhaps we do them an injustice as a glance at their official site does list twice capturing the Yorkshire Electricity Cup amongst their honours).

Halifax first slipped into the Conference at the end of the 1992/93 season but won promotion back to the league as GMVC champions in 1997/98. However their league status was short lived and they were relegated again just 4 years later.

Getting There: By Car - Head for M62 and exit at Jct 24 or Jct 25 depending on direction of travel. Head towards town centre and Shay Stadium is well signposted (if you get lost, head for Eureka Children's museum, and then follow signs to Shay Stadium). Parking is available in the nearby streets and at the nearby Glyn Webb store.

By Train: Halifax station is a 5 minute walk away. The station is served by trains from Leeds, Manchester and York.

The Stadium: Another stadium in the Conference which is also home to a Rugby League side as well as football, however The Shay is a world apart from the surroundings of Leigh RMI's Hilton Park. The Shay is a great venue for visiting supporters with clear un-obstructed views from the covered South Stand terrace. The stadium has stands on all four sides, however the East Stand has remained unfinished since the old stand was demolished at the end of the 1990's. The four corners of the ground are open, and it can get very cold in Winter.

Admission Prices: Adults - £13 Concessions - £6 U12 - £3

Websites: Unfortunately the club still bear some of the scars of their time in the Football League. One is an unfinished stadium and the other is an official website on the PTV network. Although regularly updated, many areas of the site can only be accessed by registering. www.halifaxafc.premiumtv.co.uk

There not too many decent un-official sites out there. Perhaps the best is 'Shaymen Down South' which is a fanzine for Halifax Town fans in the London area. These guys obviously had the sense to get away from the town, hence their rare ability to read and write. www.shaymendownsouth.co.uk/
