ARCHIVE NEWS - JANUARY 2008

BURTON ALBION 2 RUSHDEN & DIAMONDS 1 (29/01/08)

The Brewers bounced straight back from Saturday's defeat with a hard fought win at the Pirelli Stadium.

The match was watched by the new owners of Derby County, and the Americans must have wished they had looked a bit further down the A38 after Daryl Clare finished an excellent sweeping move to open the scoring after just 11 minutes.

However they were quickly reminded of Pride Park style play when the out of sorts Keith Gilroy lost possession and allowed the visitors to equalise through Andy Burgess before half time.

Maybe the referee's dressing room had been newly painted because they were obviously high on something as the second half saw a string of baffling decisions by the match officials.

Michael Simpson had a goal disallowed for a reason known only to the 'ass-istant' referee. Offside seemed to be the best guess by the baffled Burton fans in the ground.

The winning goal came within minutes of the introduction of substitute Marc Goodfellow. 'String' bagged his 8th goal of the season with a neat strike from the edge of the area to keep Albion firmly in 4th place in the Blue Square Premier table.

EBBSFLEET UNITED 2 BURTON ALBION 1 (26/01/08)

The unbeaten away league record, stretching back to April 2007, came to an end at Stonebridge Road.

The run had to come to an end at some stage, but the fact it was ended more by refereeing decisions than by a poor away performance is a disappointment.

Daryl Clare scored a screamer in the final minute which hopefully will signal a welcome return to the starting line-up as the 4-5-1 formation looked toothless against the home side.

The Brewers stay in 4th place in the table despite the result but Cambridge United moved level on points with just goal difference separating the two sides.

BURTON ALBION 6 RUSHALL OLYMPIC 2 (22/01/08)

The Brewers hit the visitors for six as they romped through to the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup.

The match also marked two major milestones, with Nigel Clough making his 300th Albion appearance and Darren Stride capped his 600th senior game with a goal.

The win sets up a clash with either Birmingham City or Wolverhampton Wanderers in the still to be arranged final.

BURTON ALBION 4 NORTHWICH VICTORIA 1 (19/01/08)

The Carling Cup was paraded around the ground at half-time as part of Coors' sponsorship, and the Brewers put on a performance that increased the chances of more silverware at the Pirelli Stadium.

The win against struggling Northwich cemented a place in the play-off positions with Cambridge United six points behind in 5th place.

The Brewers went ahead after just 2 minutes when Aaron Webster capitalised on a goal-mouth scramble to stab the ball in from close range.

The second goal, on the half hour, was the result of a brilliant counter attack from a Northwich corner which ended with Andy Corbett smashing the ball home.

The visitors pulled a goal back almost immediately to keep the scores close going in at half time, but second half strikes from Webster and Shaun Harrad put the match out of reach.

FA TROPHY UPDATE (16/01/08)

The Brewers will face Histon in the third round of the FA Trophy after the 'Stutes' triumphed in their local derby replay against Cambridge United.

The match will take place at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday 2nd February.

FIXTURE NEWS (15/01/08)

The league game away at Grays Athletic, scheduled for Tuesday 22 January, will need to be re-scheduled again after the weather caused havoc up and down the country.

Tonight's FA Trophy replay between Grays and York City has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and will now be played next Tuesday instead.

The Brewers now have four fixtures that are awaiting dates, including the home league game with Rushden & Diamonds and the matches in the Setanta Shield and Birmingham Senior Cup.

FA TROPHY THIRD ROUND DRAW (14/01/08)

Burton Albion have been drawn at home in the third round of the FA Trophy but face a tough test against Histon or Cambridge United.

The match between the two Cambridgeshire rivals was postponed on Saturday and so the Brewers will have to wait until Wednesday to find out who they will face at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday 2nd February.

The Blue Square Premier game at home to Rushden & Diamonds, originally scheduled for the same date, will have to be re-arranged.

VAUXHALL MOTORS 1 BURTON ALBION 4 (12/01/08)

The Brewers enjoyed another win at Rivacre Park, the scene of one of the greatest moments in the club's history, and made progress into the third round of the FA Trophy.

The last visit also saw a 4-1 victory which clinched the Unibond League title and launched the club into the Conference.

This afternoon's match was less significant, but the manner in which the home side was beaten was as comfortable as it was back in 2002.

Burton were ahead after just 90 seconds when John Brayford headed in from close range and the advantage was doubled after just five minutes after Daryl Clare scored from the penalty spot.

The home side rarely troubled the Albion defence, but striker Paul Taylor showed why he looks to be moving to Nottingham Forest as he created the best of the Motormen's chances.

Daryl Clare's second goal virtually ended the contest and allowed Nigel Clough to make some early substitutions to keep the squad fresh.

John McGrath scored a fourth goal in the second half before a late consolation from the home side.

BIRMINGHAM SENIOR CUP DRAW (11/01/08)

Semi-final draw;

Burton Albion v Rushall Olympic or Walsall

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Birmingham City

Matches to be played on or before 23 February 2008.

TORQUAY UNITED 1 BURTON ALBION 2 (07/01/08)

The Brewers are in 'Devon Heaven' after completing a league double over promotion chasing Torquay.

Aaron Webster opened the scoring before Chris Zebroski levelled things on the stroke of half-time. Shaun Harrad restored the lead six minutes after the break and Albion hung on to take all three points.

The home side twice struck the crossbar and a great save from Saul Deeney in stoppage time ensured that it was a long but happy trek back to the Midlands for the handful of travelling fans.

McGRATH IS TOP MAN IN 2007 (06/01/08)

Midfielder John McGrath goes into the new year as the leading contender for the CTMD player of the season award.

McGrath has made a big impact on Burton fans, despite being a former Tamworth player, and his battling performances have seen him just edge into the lead ahead of last year's winner John Brayford.

The award is decided by Brewers fans who vote for the man of the match for each game via the message board. Points are awarded for the top three players for each game and the trophy is presented to the player with the highest score at the end of the season.

BURTON ALBION 2 STAFFORD RANGERS 1 (01/01/08)

Jake Edwards scored the winning goal to get the New Year off to a flying start and to complete a league double over local rivals Stafford Rangers.

Marc Goodfellow gave the Brewers a deserved lead in a mainly one sided contest but a defensive blunder handed David McNiven an equaliser.

Edwards had seen an effort hit the post and other chances saved before he grabbed his 8th goal of the season.

Substitute Shaun Harrad curled an effort against the woodwork as the home side pushed forward in an attempt to kill off the visitor's stubborn resistance.
