LATEST NEWS

BURTON ALBION 3 TORQUAY UNITED 1 (10/09/07)

It maybe a bit too early to start getting carried away, but the Brewers look like they have a team capable of making a realistic push for promotion this season.

The visitors were swept aside in a storming first half, although they were not helped by a goalkeeping gaffe that allowed John Brayford to score from the half way line.

Andy Gooding added the second goal on his home debut to make it 2-0 at the break.

Torquay rallied in the second half and did pull a goal back, but Shaun Harrad secured victory with a late goal after good work from Keith Gilroy.

Another positive was the return of Darren Stride and Andy Corbett who both came on as substitutes, with David Farrell also fit enough to take a place on the bench.

NORTHWICH VICTORIA 0 BURTON ALBION 2 (04/09/07)

The Brewers moved up to fifth place in the Blue Square Premier league with a comfortable win at struggling Northwich.

It was a largely one sided match, but Kevin Poole was called into action on a couple of occasions.

Aaron Webster opened the scoring, heading in from John McGrath's corner kick. Webster had already put the ball in the net earlier in the game, but the effort was ruled out by a very whistle happy referee.

Albion's second goal was a screamer from Keith Gilroy. The little Irishman curled his shot into the top corner of the net from the edge of the area to continue his run of scoring great goals this season. Match Reaction and fans views

ANOTHER WINGER JOINS BREWERS (31/08/07)

Nigel Clough has continued his policy of bringing in loan players by signing Northampton Town winger, Sam Aiston, on a 2 month deal.

Aiston is an experienced player with more than 250 appearances to his name and can count Sunderland, Chester City and Shrewsbury Town amongst his many clubs.

With an injury crisis in the defensive positions, it is somewhat of a surprise to see another wide midfield player in the squad.

Sam signed too late to make the trip to Crawley tomorrow but should be in line to make his debut away at Northwich on Tuesday evening.

BREWERS LET SHAW LEAVE (31/08/07)

The transfer window activity continues at the Pirelli Stadium with the news that Jon Shaw has been allowed to join Halifax Town.

Shaw was the club's top scorer during the 2005/06 season with 15 goals but struggled to find form and the back of the net last season. He looked to have revived his Albion career with a man of the match performance in the opening game of this season, playing as a centre half, but he was soon back on the substitutes bench.

Jon leaves the Brewers having made 123 appearances, scoring 33 goals. A fans favourite, Jon Shaw will be guaranteed a warm reception when he returns to Burton with his new club later in the season.

BURTON ALBION 1 FARSLEY CELTIC 0 (27/08/07)

The Brewers claimed the victory in this first meeting between the two clubs but they were made to fight all the way by the visitors.

Despite a hatful of chances falling to Albion, they were denied by poor finishing and good saves from the Celtic keeper, and it took a late wonder goal from Keith Gilroy to snatch the win.

The visitors had their chances to take the points, but Kevin Poole saved Simeon Bambrook's penalty and efforts from Reeves and Bambrook again hit the woodwork.

The win, Burton's third, lifts them to 6th in the table and just one point behind the league leaders. Match reaction

WEYMOUTH 1 BURTON ALBION 2 (23/08/07)

The Brewers picked up a rare away win in their Setanta TV debut at the Wessex Stadium.

The hosts took the lead through Anton Robinson before goals from Andy Corbett and Shaun Harrad saw Burton go in at half time in the lead.

The second half saw Weymouth apply constant pressure to Kevin Poole's goal despite being down to 10 men after Douglas was dismissed for an elbow to Jon Brayford's face.

The Terras finished the game with 9 men after an injury to Nerada Bernard after all 3 substitutes had been used.

Despite the win their was bad news for Nigel Clough with both Daryl Clare and Andy Corbett picking up injuries that could keep them out of Monday's home game against Farsley Celtic.

BURTON ALBION 1 OXFORD UNITED 2 (19/08/07)

The Brewers tasted defeat for the first time this season after the visitors defied the torrential rain to come from behind to snatch victory.

Daryl Clare gave the home side an early lead when he rolled the ball into the net after good work from Marc Goodfellow. The advantage lasted barely a minute as Albion Oldboy Gary Twigg equalised at the other end.

Twigg had the chance to double his tally from the penalty spot but Kevin Poole got down well to keep the ball out,

The second half was played out in driving rain and it was the visitors that seemed to adapt better to the conditions. Yemi Odubade grabbed the winner 10 minutes in the second half with a simple tap in at the far post. Burton rarely threatened the Oxford goal but did see a couple of efforts fly just wide of the goal.  Full match reaction from the managers and fans....

LATE CLARE STRIKE SPARES BREWERS BLUSHES (11/08/07)

A stunning free kick from Daryl Clare earned a late point as the Brewers drew 2-2 with Histon on the opening day of the Blue Square Premier season.

Nigel Clough selected a rather unorthodox line-up with central defender Mark Greaves in midfield and striker Jon Shaw at the heart of the defence. The resources were stretched further when Tony James picked up an early injury and had to be replaced.

The first half was frantic and scrappy and was played out in sweltering conditions. The long ball tactics of John Beck were clearly evident from the home side and unfortunately they also rubbed off on the Brewers.

The team talk at the interval looked to have reminded the players that the ball could be played on the ground and the advice paid off as John McGrath opened the scoring in the 46th minute.

The visitors equalised and then took the lead with just two minutes to go after poor defending from the Brewers, but Clare denied the Stutes a first victory by firing in a 30 yard free kick with almost the last kick of the game. match views

HERE WE GO! (11/08/07)

The 2007/08 Blue Square Premier league season finally kicks off this afternoon with Burton Albion facing a tricky trip to newcomers Histon.

The team from a small village in Cambridgeshire have risen through the leagues and are now playing their football alongside their more illustrious neighbours Cambridge United.

The club have former United manager John Beck as coach, and he is certainly not stranger to making a small club successful. The U's were on the verge of  joining the newly formed Premier League but were beaten by Leicester City in the play-offs.

The Brewers go into this afternoon's game at the Glassworld Stadium with a couple of notable absentees. Skipper Darren Stride is joined by Ryan Austin on the treatment table whilst Danny Holmes is suspended. Nigel Clough should give debuts to all the new summer signings, but the biggest surprise could be striker Jon Shaw starting the season as a central defender.

For fans making the trip to Histon, full directions and details can be found in the club guide section.

BAD NEWS FOR POOLE, GREAT NEWS FOR BREWERS (09/08/07)

Kevin Poole will be lining up between the sticks for Burton Albion this season after it was revealed he has missed out on a top coaching job.

The veteran keeper looked to be heading out of the Pirelli Stadium to take up a post at a Premier League club and would only be available for the first couple of games for the Brewers.

Kevin's loss is certainly Burton's gain as last season's player of the season will now be available for the entire 2007/08 campaign.

BURTON ALBION 2 NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1 (02/08/07)

The Brewers retained the Bass Charity Vase and secured a second win in the space of a week against a young Nottingham Forest side.

Nigel Clough opted to also play a second string team which contained a makeshift backline without a recognised defender.

After the visitors had taken the lead, a goal from trialist Adrian Webster and a Marc Goodfellow penalty ensured the silverware would be staying at the Pirelli Stadium.
