Nigel Clough has been a long time admirer of the talents of Sam Aiston and made attempts to capture him for the Brewers.

After impressing against Burton while playing for Shrewsbury Town, Clough did try to secure his services but the player opted to join Tranmere Rovers instead.

After a spell at Prenton Park he joined Northampton Town but found his first team opportunities were limited.

Joined the Brewers on loan in September 2007. Made 5 appearances but failed to convince Nigel Clough to extend his deal for a further month.
