Despite only playing half a dozen games for the
Brewers, Kris Taylor will probably be regarded as one of the best
players in the clubs history. He joined the club on loan from
Walsall after impressing Nigel Clough by scoring two goals for the
Saddlers in a Birmingham Senior Cup match at Eton Park.
His first appearance was low key in a shocking
3-0 home defeat to Stevenage Borough, but in his second game he
really came to life. He opened his goal account in a 2-1 win away at
York and then went on a run of scoring a goal in each of his next
three games as well. He scored a stunning 35 yard goal at Tamworth
(which each time the scoring is retold will probably be another few
yards out) and showed his complete repertoire with another great
goal against Hereford United in another memorable win and followed
it up with a stunning 'Beckham-esque' free kick in the FA Trophy
against York City.
Although his impressive goals and performances
had a big bearing on revitalising, what up until then, had been a
disappointing season, it ultimately spelt the end of his Albion
career. Walsall realised the talent that they had and quickly
recalled him in a bid to turn their own fortunes around.
Although it was always inevitable that a player
of Kris's talent was never going to be at Burton in the long term,
there was a collective air of sadness when he left.
