Eddie
Shimwell came to Burton Albion with a long and distinguished
football league career behind him.
He
started his career at Sheffield United in 1946, but he really made
his name following a move to Blackpool. He made almost 300
appearances for the Bloomfield Road club, including 3 FA Cup finals.
He scored in the 1948 final but ended up on the losing side and was
again a runner up in 1951. He played in the 1953 "Matthews" final,
this time picking up a winners medal.
A
dislocated shoulder, picked up against Wolverhampton Wanderers in
September 1955 limited him to just one more game for the Seasiders,
making his farewell appearance in January 1957.
He earned
a full England cap against Sweden in May 1949, his only appearance
for his country.
Eddie was
given a free transfer to Oldham Athletic before joining the Brewers
as player/manager at in 1958. He left Eton Park in December 1958 to
become player/manager at Matlock Town.
