The signing of Darren Tinson raised a few
eyebrows as his age seemed to go against manager Nigel Clough's
policy of trying to lower the age of the squad. However players of
this quality and experience do not become available too often, and
the decision to sign the then 35 year old seemed to have paid off.
Darren had already had experience of helping a
team gain promotion from the Conference. He was part of the
Macclesfield side that won the title in the 1996/97 season, and then
did it again with Shrewsbury Town in 2003/04.
A veteran of almost 500 appearances since staring
his career with Northwich Victoria, Darren used his experience to
great effective. A player in the mould of Tony Adams, the barrel chested defender more than compensated for his fading legs by
using his vast experience to make crucial tackles and interventions.
His performances in his first season for the
Brewers saw him pick up the player of the season award and put him
up alongside the greatest Albion defenders of all time.
His second season was less successful as injuries
limited his appearances and he was no longer guaranteed a starting
place in the team. He was offered non contract terms at the end of
the 2006/07 season but opted instead to join Altrincham instead
where he was able to combine his full time job as a physiotherapist
with the demands of a part time football club.
